REVERSE KARAOKE: KIM GORDON & JUTTA KOETHER
South London Gallery, November-December 2005

Reverse Karaoke aims to demystify the process of music making. Drawing on the DIY nature of her musical history with her band Sonic Youth, Kim Gordon invites visitors to record their own track along the pre-recorded sound of her voice. 'I always liked the idea of a disembodied voice in a space'. Gordon said about Reverse Karaoke: 'Coming from a DIY punk context, it's important for me to show how easy it can be to make music.'

This work has been made in collaboration with Jutta Koether, a visual artist who draws on New York's experimental music scene. The work is complemented by a series of evening performances by artists Jenny Hoyston (Erase Errata), Heather Leigh Murray, Christina Carter, Ana Da Silva (The Raincoats), Partyline and Spider and the Webs.

Reverse Karaoke is commissioned by and produced by Electra, and is part of the Her Noise season of performances, events and installations. Electra gratefully acknowledges the support of the following funders for the Her Noise season:

Arts Council England, South London Gallery, Elephant Trust, Feminist Review Trust, Goethe-Institut London, Henry Moore Foundation, Performing Rights Society Foundation and Women in Music. Media Sponsor:The Wire Magazine.
