EMOTIONAL ORCHESTRA: MARINA ROSENFELD
Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, London
7.30pm, 23rd September 2005

New York-based artist and composer Marina Rosenfeld presents the UK premiere of her new work for electro-acoustic string orchestra, to be performed by an all-female cast of improvisers. Following a two-day workshop that was open to the community, participants in the performance will wield bows upon an array of bowable instruments, including strings, electric guitars, percussion and harp, in a 40-minute composition that elicits extraordinary music-making, at turns brutal and delicate, from an ensemble, many of whom will have never touched an instrument before. The work also features Rosenfeld's own graphic notation, in the form of video-animation, and a custom-designed garment created by New York fashion collective As Four.

Composer and artist Marina Rosenfeld (b. New York, 1968) is based in Brooklyn, NY. Her sound compositions, live performances and music-photography-video installations have been presented at numerous festivals, museums, galleries internationally, including at the Whitney Biennial, Deitch Projects and Creative Time. Rosenfeld is also the creator and director of the critically acclaimed sheer frost orchestra, the 17-woman electric-guitar and nail-polish-bottle orchestra she founded in 1994. She is also a frequent improvisor/collaborator and has worked with artists including Christian Marclay, Sonic Youth and Merce Cunningham.

Emotional Orchestra is commissioned by and produced by Electra, and is part of the Her Noise season of performances, events and installations. Electra gratefully acknowledges the support of the following funders for the Her Noise season:
